Portland, OR, Mt. St. Helens, Mt Hood and the Colombia River Gorge.

When you go to Portland you have to go into town and eat at
Jake's Famous Craw Fish Restaurant

Sue loved the chowder

And of course I went for the cedar plank salmon

Snug Harbor

Snug Harbor in Stevenson WA is where Sue  and I first visited Washington about 14 years ago.  It is the former home of  my sister Janet and her husband Irv.  It was nice to return to the area.  We couldn't get to good a look, as there were numerous no trespassing signs posted.  It is still an amazing area.

When we began our tour and exploration of Portland we decided that we would duplicate the tour that Janet and Irv gave us a few years ago.   We decided that these area experts would have shown us the most important things here, so this is where we started.   We also added to these places on some additional trips also, as we drove around and saw other interesting sites.

The Grotto Catholic Shrine

Sue and I have often wished we could go back to the Grotto, the outdoor Cathedral is amazing, and the gardens are peaceful and beautiful.  This was our first stop while in the area.

The Columbia Gorge is an breathtaking trip, waterfalls, views of the Columbia River, narrow winding mountain roads.  If you are looking for things to do in Portland, the Gorge is the # 1 on most lists.  We were introduced to this by Janet and Irv, and we knew we wanted to go back.  If you are ever in this area, this is a must do.  It is an amazing drive, and for us, the weather was fantastic.
Vista House on the Columbia Historical Highway is a great place to get out of the truck for a while and just take in the views.

Mt Hood
Mount Hood is another trip we had to make, once at the Timberline Lodge we explored the lodge and then the trails all around it.

Mount St. Helens

This was the first time Sue and I have ever visited Mt. St Helen.  We were both young adults when the volcano erupted.  As many of you remember, the volcano was monitored for weeks, before it erupted in 1980.  We had never heard of this mountain prior to the eruption, but we certainly knew about it after. News of Mt St Helens took over the television.  We watched for weeks as some residents refused to leave.  Scientist stayed in the area, monitoring the volcano.  Who can forget the long time resident named Harry Truman, who refused to leave his home, and perished because of his decision, as 56 others.  It was very eerie to visit this site of such destruction and death.

From Sue- We had a wonderful time during our stay in Portland.  One of the best parts was being able to visit with Aunt Rose and my cousins Bobby and Andy.   I hadn't seen my cousins in about 40 years.  It was so great to spend time with them.  Bobby invited Dave and I to his home, which was about 20 minutes from us on the other side of the Columbia River.  It was great to spend quality time with him.

I just love the opportunities to catch up with relatives as we travel across the country.
