Glacier National Park - day 1

Going To The Sun Road

Glacier National Park, is a national treasure.  The main road thru the park, Going to the Sun Road, is 50 miles long and rises to an elevation of 6700 feet at Logan Pass.  The road was completed in 1933.  It was quite a feat to build this road along the edge of the mountains at great height, with the tools they had at that time. And here we were almost a century later, enjoying the views that their hard work created.

This road is so narrow we had to fold the mirrors in on the truck to keep from scraping the mountainside or the opposing traffic.  Much of the Alpine section had guardrails of some type but had a sheer drop off on the other side of the rails.

Construction of this road was begun in 1921 and completed in 1932.  The hairpin turns throughout the road and narrowness of the road of course required a very slow speed, but that slow speed allowed me to enjoy some of the scenes along the route that were breathtaking in more than one way.

We decide to travel the Going to the Sun Road From East to West, and traveled through the Indian Reservation to get to the East Gate

The views here were amazing also, although the roads were more rugged and even narrower.

The roads might have been less convenient but traffic was extremely light and allowed us to enjoy sights more, until we ran into this traffic jam.  I think this beautiful group is the "welcoming committee".

As we climbed to the summit we had to stop once in awhile to take in all the sights.

Finally climbing to 6700 feet we were at the summit

"Look at that" !!

At the top we roamed through fields of mountain flowers, and just took in all the view.

Beautiful Lady framed by beauty

As we were sitting there this fellow walked up to say hello

Once he found his favorite spot he posed for all the cameras

After he decided we had enough pics he went to a new audience.

The trip down from the summit was no less beautiful.

Every turn and pull over made us want to put out the chairs pour a glass of wine and just sit and take in the vista that surrounded us.

We loved each part of this journey.

The road was just opened on June 23 because before that it was  still snow covered, and they were plowing the roads.

Lots of Waterfalls through out the park

It is hard to see but there is a long waterfall from mountain top

Glacier melting had rivers on every side of us
Well not surprising with all we had to see, but this road trip took up the day.  Sue has decided tomorrow is hiking day so we will see what new we find.
