Salt Lake City June 10 - 20, 2019

When we arrived in Salt Lake, we had no expectations.  We scheduled this location so that I could catch a plane to my son David's wedding. Salt Lake City is a city after all, no National Parks here.  We were very pleasantly surprised.  Antelope Island State Park is a very beautiful park on Salt Lake.  This park is full of surprises. The scenery was amazing.  There was an eerie haze over the lake this day.   The mountains in the background were beautiful.  We were on the look out for antelope, big horn sheep, and buffalo.  We did see an antelope on the beach.  There were herds of buffalo down by the lake, this is the first time we saw buffalo in the wild, and there were hundreds.  An amazing site.  However, we did not find any big horn sheep.

We both took off our shoes and walked into Salt Lake. It is different from any other lake we have ever seen.  With so much salt, there are no fish at all.  The two life forms are brine shrimp, which were very small and everywhere.  There also were brine flies.  They were very interesting.   They swarmed in the lake and on the shore.  As you approached them they moved forward.  You could hear them jumping.  It was fun too watch them move ahead of you.  When we got home, I realized our feet and ankles were white from salt. This was definitely a wonderful stop.

I'm not impressed and the flies were so thick they were like a blanket on the sand.

I think that for most people, when you say Salt Lake City, you think of two things, 1. the Lake and 2. Home of the Mormon Church.  Once I returned from the wedding, we headed out to visit Salt Lake City, particularly Mormon Square.  We were in for a treat.  The Mormon Church is very welcoming to their visitors.  You are free to walk around Mormon Square on your own, but we decided to have one of the young ministers show us around.  Our tour guides were fantastic.  When we walked into the temple, an organist was practicing.  The sound of the organ was amazing.
