Intermittent Spring in Afton Wyoming

Our hike today was in Afton, Wyoming, where we were greeted with the World's Largest Elk Horn Arch.   Could not even begin to guess how many elk horns are linked together to create this archway.

The trail followed swift creek up to the springs.  As usual this was a 3 mile rocky trail with a pretty steep incline.

The spring comes out of the side of the mountain

Also known as Periodic Spring, there is a huge cavern inside the mountain and it fills with water.  When it is full the water shoots out a narrow tube from the cavern out the side of the mountain. The siphon effect from the water emptying the cavern make almost a cold geyser effect.  Nature, physics science and geology all in one dam trip, pretty cool.

The water flow was much heavier due to the snow melt.

Susan hiked to the top to try and get a better photo of it shooting out of mountain but the flow of water was to great to get all the way up the path.
