The day after we went to Grand Teton NP, we decided to go for a drive in the mountains. Grey River Road out of Alpine Wyoming is a one lane dirt road with virtually no pull offs along the way. After driving around for a half hour, we realized it wasn't much fun for Dave to drive, as the roads were narrow, and there was not much distance to the edge, which dropped down dramatically to the river below. We decided to take the highway to the Grand Tetons, which follows the Snake River, it is much more relaxing and scenic. We made the right decision. We stopped by a rest stop used to launch boats and kayaks, and found people doing something we had never seen before. Surfers were surfing in the turbulent river, with a goal to surf in place. Some were successful, many not. They would try to stand up, and the water would take them away. They would than have to wait there turn to try again. We watched many rafters out for the whitewater. One went by, and all but the guide was thrown from the raft. They managed to get back on and continue down the river.
It was great fun to watch. I may have tried it in my 30's, but for now, I was content to watch the excitement.
We worked our way back to Jackson Hole, where we rode the gondola to the top, and enjoyed a great view while enjoying a beer. On our way back, we saw a large herd of moose. A few minutes later we passed a mother moose with her two young calves playing in the water near the road. What a great way to spend the day.
Teton Village Moose Herds
As we headed into Teton Village which is a ski village outside of Jackson Hole Wyoming, we saw huge flashing signs of Watch for Moose. They were not kidding we noticed herds along the road in this area.
