Sturbridge MA

Bancroft Tower, Worchester, MA

Our visit to Sturbridge MA area.

We arrived in Sturbridge MA on August 22, 2018.
Our goal was to go hiking and kayaking.  Sturbridge is known for it's village.  We decided that since it was a recreated village, we would not visit it on this trip.  The area surrounding the Sturbridge RV Resort is beautiful. The campground was just OK. The spaces were very small, or very hilly.  I guess they are going through some changes, so we can only hope it gets better  in time. The day after we arrived, we investigated a local park, Bigelow Hollow State Park, which we found out about from clerk at an RV parts store.  We walked around the park the day after we arrived here..  There were a lot of good trails, views of the Mashapaug pond, and a number of interesting people.  We decided we would have to come back and kayak.  As we were told it was busy on the week end, we waited until Monday to go back.

On the weekend, we explored Worcester, MA and Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park.

Cascading Water, Worcester
We would not recommend either of these locations.  The Bancroft Tower was a five minute visit, as you see as much from the photos as we did in person.  No plaques explaining it, and it is only open on Sundays in October.  The cascading Water was a good hike, we enjoyed it, but we enjoyed Bigelow so much more.

Dave is a hot dog aficionado, so one of the reasons we choose to explore Worcester was to go to Georges Coney Island, so he could share his love of coney dogs with me.  That was a good stop.  Dave enjoyed the conies, and I got to enjoy them with him.

On our way home we decided to go to Mass in Notre Dame Catholic Church in Southbridge.  We found it to be one of the most beautiful churches we have ever been in, and we like to visit Churches. They had an amazing pipe organ.  Our time there was amazing. The church was build in 1916, after the original church burnt down.  The craftsmanship was incredible, and the organ was heavenly.

We were hoping to find a place to kayak on Sunday so we went to the Blackstone River State Park.  As it turns out, the river and canal were not good for kayaking.  It was, however, a good area for a hike.   The area surrounding the park was beautiful.  We enjoy driving around looking at the scenery as much as anything.  So we had two nice days.

Monday and Tuesday we explored Bigelow Holland State Park, close by in Connecticut.  This park was amazing.  We enjoyed kayaking there for two days.  Tuesday had temps close to 100 degrees.  It was great to cool off in Mashapug lake.  The water was wonderful, so clear and beautiful.  A wonderful way to spend a hot day.
Stonehedge II
Dave's hat was used as a landing strip for dragon flys most of the day.

We enjoyed a couple of good restaurants while in Sturbridge.  One was the Salem Cross Inn, which is a restored historic farmhouse.  A charming spot to enjoy great food in a historic setting.  I am a big fan of chicken pot pie.  They had the best I had ever tasted.

We leave tomorrow 8/30/2018 for Bar Harbor Maine.  We will be in Maine for 4 weeks, with our second Maine location being in Wells Beach.  We are so looking forward to it.  This is as far north as we go this year.

Review Sturbridge RV Resort                             This is a Thousand Trails Property

The entrance to Sturbridge RV Resort is well marked, sites are you pick your own.  The management seems to have let maintenance go and are not keeping up dirt roads and lots.
Sites in the lower or front of the park are somewhat level and unshaded. You park so close you can barely open your slide outs, and back bumpers are inches apart, dirt and muddy when it rains.  Sites are tight to maneuver into. Sites are 50 Amp/Water/Sewer
The upper lots are well shaded, but very tight to maneuver.  One lot I was given a choice of I would have had to back up a tenth of a mile to use.  All are on hills and require extensive leveling.  Upper lots have Water/ varying amperage/honeywagon available
I will not return to sturbridge RV Resort, until it has a serious makeover.
