Week 1 Southern Maine Coast, Sept 13-20 2018

Week 1.

What a great time we are having in Southern Maine.  We are staying in Moody Beach Campgroundin Wells.  The weather is close to wonderful.  Low 70's and high 60's.  Mostly sunny, with some cloudy days.  It just feels great to be out enjoying nature.

The food here is amazing.  There in a wonderful diner in Wells Maine, called "Maine Diner".  During our first visit Dave and I shared a Seafood Chowder, proclaimed by staff to be world famous.  It was amazing.  Loaded with lobster, scallops, shrimp and clams and a lot of flavor.  Dave opted to try the lobster pie, a natural follow up to the lobster ice cream he had in Bar Harbor.  This pie is not a dessert, but rather more of a casserole.  Equally amazing.   So far we have been back here three times, haven't had a bad meal yet.

We visited Portsmouth, NH., just over the Maine border.  I lived here for five years in the mid to late 1980's.  It holds a very special place in my heart, as my children were born in Portsmouth.  The town changed a lot since I lived here, but for the better.  We lived on an Air Force base which closed.  The base has been totally renovated.  All base housing was torn down, and it is now Portsmouth International Airport at Pease.  The downtown area has been renovated and it is now a beautiful, historic seaside city.

We also spent a day in Kennebunkport, located a few miles north of Wells.  It is a quaint seaside resort, full of Bed and Breakfasts, small shops, lobster boats.  Here we had the pleasure of trying a unique ice cream waffle cone.  It was made by your choice of  pie, which was used to line the inside of the cone, and than you added your choice of ice cream.  A very fun treat.

We took a beautiful walk along the ocean, and viewed the Bush compound on Walker Point.  It was a beautiful walk, something about the ocean crashing on the rocks is so comforting.

We also visited the neighboring town of Oqunquit.  Another scenic seashore town.  There is also a scenic ocean side walk there.  The ocean here is amazing to view.  We did put our feet in the ocean, but there were actually people swimming there.  Not us.

Yesterday we went to the Rachael Carson Natural Wildlife Refuge,  we walked on a mile long trail that ran along the wetlands. There was beautiful scenery there.
We followed that with a long nature walk at the nearby the Wells National Estuarine Reserve.  This trail lead us to the Wells Beach, where we went for a long walk along the ocean, at low tide.  At high tide, the entire area would be covered in water.  Amazing.  It was a wonderful day for a long walk.  My FitBit was very happy with us, and we enjoyed the scenery and the cool weather.
